Download the vHelix plugin for Autodesk Maya http://www.vhelix.net/

The plugin is available for the 64-bit versions of Autodesk Maya 2011, 2012 and 2013 under Windows, Linux and Mac OS X. It is currently not available for other versions of Maya and not for the 32-bit versions. The plugin might work with other versions of Maya but that has not been tested. If you are interested in using the plugin with another version of Autodesk Maya, you will need to download the source and compile the module for your system.

The plugin is hosted https://github.com/gardell/vHelix The files hosted there are updated regularly with fixes and new features, but might also suffer from regression.

Installation instructions at the github repository are given in the given on the first page of the repository at https://github.com/gardell/vHelix or directly at https://github.com/gardell/vHelix/blob/master/README.md. The instructions contain a brief description of the organization of the files and how to enable Autodesk Maya to use the plugin. The links below point directly to the binaries required. Along with the binary versions below are some brief installation instructions as well.

1st Unity plug-in for augmented reality on physical devices

Sphereo game 475x256 1st Unity plug in for augmented reality on physical devices

The makers of Sphero – the smartphone controlled robotic ball, have announced new ways developers can make the ball more appealing to consumers with augmented reality based gaming applications.

Orbotix have created a new Sphero augmented reality plug-in for Unity, as well as making a new Sphero AR SDK available on Github – the world’s largest open source code sharing community.

This means that developers can simply insert their 3D models and create games/apps around them – all using the Sphero ball as a physical moving AR marker.  There are already augmented reality games/apps available, such as Shaky the Beaver, launched in November 2012.   <<  More  >>

'Design Thinking' Concept Gains Traction as More Programs Offer the Problem-Solving Courses

BY MELISSA KORN AND RACHEL EMMA SILVERMAN – Wall Street Journal
Forget b-school. These days, d.school is the place to go.
Stanford University's d.school—the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design—has gained recognition in recent years for introducing the trendy, but murky, problem-solving concept known as "design thinking" to executives, educators, scientists, doctors and lawyers. Now other schools are coming up with their own programs.

Design thinking uses close, almost anthropological observation of people to gain insight into problems that may not be articulated yet. For example, researchers may study the habits of shoppers waiting to pay for groceries in order to create a more efficient checkout system that maximizes last-minute purchases while ...

Pixar Story (22) Rules

Sunday, May 15, 2011 at 03:39PM

From: The Pixar Touch Blog
Pixar story artist Emma Coats has tweeted a series of “story basics” over the past month and a half — guidelines that she learned from her more senior colleagues on how to create appealing stories:

#1: You admire a character for trying more than for their successes.

#2: You gotta keep in mind what’s interesting to you as an audience, not what’s fun to do as a writer. They can be v. different.

#3: Trying for theme is important, but you won’t see what the story is actually about til you’re at the end of it. Now rewrite.

#4: Once upon a time there was ___. Every day, ___. One day ___. Because of that, ___. Because of that, ___. Until finally ___.

#5: Simplify. Focus. Combine characters. Hop over detours. You’ll feel like you’re losing valuable stuff but it sets you free.

#6: What is your character good at, comfortable with? Throw the polar opposite at them. Challenge them. How do they deal?

#7: Come up with your ending before you figure out your middle. Seriously. Endings are hard, get yours working up front.

#8: Finish your story, let go even if it’s not perfect. In an ideal world you have both, but move on. Do better next time.

The Coolest STEM Artist! Golan Levin

About a year ago, I went to the Denver Art Museum’s Blink show an saw one of the coolest interactive artworks I have ever seen.  It was a projection that looked at you shadow and analyzed it for closed loops.  For example, if you made the OK symbol with your fingers, it would turn the shape between your fingers into a surface and fall to the ground making a crashing sound.  The larger the surface the deeper the sound.  It was awesome!!!
Some of the work was done by Golan Levin.  Check out his TED talk. ~Cornell

Chrysler Uses 3D Animation: An Assembly Line Gone Hollywood

Chrysler workers are using tools normally found at film animation studios -- such as 3D videos and computerized motion sensors -- to reshape the way they assemble a car or build an engine.

The automaker and the UAW have created an amusement park-like atmosphere in a generic industrial building in Warren to teach problem-solving skills that workers apply back at their plants, said Scott Tolmie, World Class Manufacturing academy leader.
