Now I have been using Maya for over 10 years and I am still a hardcore Maya junkie and have no plan of switching.  With that, every few years I give Blender a try and haven’t really been impressed, maybe because of my comfort level with Maya; I can navigate the interface with my eyes closed – literally.  If you are not familiar with Blender . . . It is a free open source 3d modeling and animation application.

1st Unity plug-in for augmented reality on physical devices

Sphereo game 475x256 1st Unity plug in for augmented reality on physical devices

The makers of Sphero – the smartphone controlled robotic ball, have announced new ways developers can make the ball more appealing to consumers with augmented reality based gaming applications.

Orbotix have created a new Sphero augmented reality plug-in for Unity, as well as making a new Sphero AR SDK available on Github – the world’s largest open source code sharing community.

This means that developers can simply insert their 3D models and create games/apps around them – all using the Sphero ball as a physical moving AR marker.  There are already augmented reality games/apps available, such as Shaky the Beaver, launched in November 2012.   <<  More  >>

Will 3D Printing Change the World?

This PBS Special is a great video to initiate a discussion on  the future trends of the 3d industry and its impact on our society.  Honestly, it really gets me thinking about the future and the direction education needs to take.     ~Cornell

Medical 3D Printing – The Human Ear

I am always amazed on the latest innovations in 3d technologies.  Check this out, printing live cartilage of a human ear.   Wow, 3d technologies are just at its infancy and who knows it future.  It might help to watch more Star Trek.

The Coolest STEM Artist! Golan Levin

About a year ago, I went to the Denver Art Museum’s Blink show an saw one of the coolest interactive artworks I have ever seen.  It was a projection that looked at you shadow and analyzed it for closed loops.  For example, if you made the OK symbol with your fingers, it would turn the shape between your fingers into a surface and fall to the ground making a crashing sound.  The larger the surface the deeper the sound.  It was awesome!!!
Some of the work was done by Golan Levin.  Check out his TED talk. ~Cornell

3D Glass Printer??? - SolarSinter Project

Now it seems a bit crude, but think of the 3D potential – printing in glass.  Specially from the perspective of a digital sculptor.   I think is is way too cool!  We are just entering the teen year of 3D technologies, printers that print in food, plastic, wax, metal, tissue (medical uses) , and now glass.  The 3D industry is not going away; it has only just begun.  ~Cornell

In this experiment sunlight and sand are used as raw energy and material to produce glass objects using a 3D printing process, that combines natural energy and material with high-tech production technology.

Autodesk at IBC 2011–LIVE

If you happened to miss any of  the Autodesk live feed presentations, Autodesk added a cool feature DVR, which allows you to jump anywhere in the  presentation.  So if you missed the beginning, you can always rewind a bit.  Now since it is Live, you can’t watch the future unless you are in the past.  If that makes sense.  We just watched the latest Autodesk reel and Maya live feed in class to day.  Very COOL!

All the videos seem to be on-demand, so it is great for the varying classroom schedule, including interviews, on-demand demos, behind-the-scenes reports, and more.

*You need to at least watch the latest Autodesk Show reel.  It is awesome and the students really get  PSYCHED!  ~Cornell
