WHAT IS THE MOCK FIRM COMPETITION?
The Mock Architecture Firm Competition is the next step in student design competition. It is an exciting & innovative opportunity for students interested in the design/build industry to test their skills in a uniquely collaborative environment and against peers on a national level.
WHAT IS THE FOCUS OF THIS YEAR’S CONTEST?
This year’s theme is “No Fear of Heights!” As the skyscraper has once again become a focal point of architectural conversation around the world, we are challenging students to design and build an iconic structure to be located any where in the world..
HOW DOES THE COMPETITION WORK?
Entrants are to submit concept sketches of the target project from which state winners ( currently, the top 3 submissions will qualify for finals. This is subject to modification as the contest may necessitate) will be determined. Winners will gather in Chicago over a 3-day period in May to present the entirety of their work to a panel of industry professionals. The 2009 MAF will be declared at the conclusion of nationals.
IS THERE A MIN/MAX FOR FIRM PARTICIPATION?
The minimum student participation for a mock architecture firm is two (2). In the case of the inability to secure another student to make the minimum number, a teacher can substitute. The maximum number is four students plus one instructor, if desired. The inclusion of an instructor on will require an additional registration fee.
WHO CAN ENTER?
Students who are currently in high school, or are undergrads at a college or university or who are attending graduate school can enter the competition. Divisions will be determined at a later date.
EXCEPTION FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS
A student team from a particular college or university entering the completion will register by submitting their sketch, form and fees, but are automatically eligible to participate at the national finals. However, only one (1) team (firm) from that school will be accepted. In the even of multiple entries from one post-secondary institution is received, one will be judged to proceed out of that group.
Additionally, the registration deadline for college participants is February 20. There is no late fee for registrations arriving on with this date.
HOW ARE THE PROJECTS JUDGED?
Projects will be judged by architects, professors, graduate students, media and members of the international Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat. Evaluations will be based on the following: precision, practicality, participation & presentation.
WHAT HAPPENS AT NATIONALS?
Each firm will be given a 15-20 min window to present their firm, and projects consisting of CAD drawings, a model, media presentation and oral presentation.. After jury review, winners will be announced. Participants will all receive lunch, dinner, city and campus tours, and involvement in an entertainment event.
WHAT DO WE RECEIVE IF WE WIN IT ALL?
State Mock Architecture Firm winners will receive awards for themselves and their schools and of course the right to participate at nationals in Chicago. The national winners will receive an award package which could be upwards of $4000.00. Additionally, an internship is a possibility depending upon availability for one of the top firms.

February 20, 2009—Qualifying Sketches Due

Here is a great FX demo reel example. It is powerful, short and makes you want more. Peter Sanitra was born in Slovakia in 1980 and started CG with 3D studio R4. Currently lives in Prague.
He describes himself as a generalist, but his reel does not show this, he is much more than that. His portfolio shows a lot of newer work and is more reflective of a generalist. I still think he is more than just a generalist. It was created in 2006 and seems to have gotten him tons of work. Well, he has not created a newer reel or maybe had time to.
Scott Eaton is a classical style digital sculptor who uses Maya and Z-Brush. He has written a number of tutorials on realism and anatomy fro digital artists. He has both a traditional and technical background. He received his master’s degree from the MIT Media Lab and subsequently studied traditional fine art at the Florence Academy of Art, Italy where he began to integrate the lessons of the old masters with modern computer graphics tools. The Aesthetic Evolution of Digital Sculpture | About Me . . . | [-] |
Creativity and design has always been a huge part of my life, it has been infused in the way I think, live, parent, and teach, so it is difficult to separate it from my instruction. My classroom is a 'studio' and more than just physical space, it is a way of thinking, it is a process, it is an atmosphere, it is what I call a “Creative Epicenter”.
I am a 3d designer and sculptor and have eight years of industry related experience; independent contractor for various firms, five years in the public art industry- lead designer, and founder and head artist at Specular Studios LLC.
I have sixteen years experience working with k-12 and post-secondary students; eleven of those years my emphasis has been teaching creative work flows, the design process, 3d design, and visualization. Additionally, I spent two years as District Technology Coordinator and curriculum trainer in NY. Over the last 12 years, I have developed two design program models, a new high school model, Digital-Evolutions and a middle school version TEAM-C in Denver Public schools.
Currently, I am teaching: 3D Design and Animation, Advanced 3D Design and Animation, Digital Portfolio I and II, Computer Graphics, MYP Design Technology, and IB Digital Arts. The backbone that drives these courses is teaching the creative and design process, in which I emphasis that 70% of the student's effort is the development the idea.
